Description

Syndol Tablets

Syndol is a combination painkiller containing paracetamol, codeine and caffeine. It is used for mild to moderate pain including headache, migraine, dental pain and muscular aches, where simpler painkillers have not been enough. It is intended for short term use only.

How it works

The three ingredients contribute in different ways. Paracetamol reduces the production of the chemical messengers that signal pain. Codeine is an opioid that changes how the brain and nervous system interpret the pain signal. Caffeine is included because it has been shown to enhance the effect of painkillers, and it also narrows blood vessels, which can be useful in some headaches.

How to use it

Swallow the tablets with water, following the dosing on the pack and leaving the stated interval between doses. Do not exceed the maximum in 24 hours, and do not take any other product containing paracetamol or codeine at the same time. Pharmacy supply is for a maximum of three days; if pain persists beyond that it needs assessing rather than continued treatment.

Who it is for

It is for adults and young people as stated on the pack. It is not for children under 12, not for anyone who has had their tonsils or adenoids removed for breathing problems, and not while breastfeeding. Tell a pharmacist about breathing problems, liver or kidney disease, or any history of dependence. The caffeine content is worth bearing in mind if you already drink a lot of coffee.

Safety and when to get advice

Codeine can cause constipation and drowsiness, and continued use leads to tolerance and dependence, which is why courses are deliberately short. Taking more paracetamol than the maximum can cause serious liver damage even when you feel well, so seek immediate advice if too much is taken. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol. Using painkillers on more than about 10 days a month can itself cause headache. Will the caffeine keep me awake?
It can, particularly in the evening or if you already drink a lot of coffee.
