About the Fitness DNA Test

The Fitness DNA Test is an at home genetic test for people who train and want their programme to reflect how their own body responds. It covers exercise related areas such as power compared with endurance, muscle growth, repair and recovery, tendon injury risk, and how your blood pressure and cholesterol respond after a workout, alongside the diet and nutrition markers that sit behind your fuelling.

How it works

Specific variants in your DNA are associated in published research with traits such as muscle fibre type, recovery speed and how the body adapts to training load. The laboratory reads those variants from your cheek swab and turns them into plain English reports, each one setting out the trait, your result and what it tends to mean for the way you train, rest and eat around sessions.

How to use it

Order the kit, swab the inside of your cheek when it arrives, register the kit code and post the sample back in the prepaid envelope. Once the laboratory has processed it you are emailed and can open the report in your secure account. Many people take the report to a coach or personal trainer and use it to shape session structure, recovery days and fuelling.

What the test measures

Exercise response: post workout blood pressure response, post workout cholesterol response, muscle power compared with endurance, muscle growth, repair and recovery, and Achilles tendinopathy. Diet and nutrition makeup: lactose intolerance, fat and glucose metabolism, caffeine metabolism, alcohol response, and folate (B9), vitamin B12, vitamin D and vitamin A. Sugar conversion and innate diet routines: feeling full and hunger response, energy metabolism, food pleasure response and appetite, binge eating and snacking behaviour, sugar sensitivity, proinsulin conversion rate, fasting blood glucose, glucose regulation and glucose uptake sensitivity. Sample collection is by cheek swab.

Who it is for

It suits adults who already train, or who are about to start, and want more structure than a generic plan gives. It is not suitable for under 18s and it is not a medical assessment of whether you are fit to exercise.

Safety and when to get advice

Genetic results describe tendencies and do not predict performance or guarantee any outcome. Training history, sleep, nutrition, age and consistency matter at least as much. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, a recent injury or any symptom such as chest pain or unusual breathlessness during exercise, get medical advice before changing your training.
