Description

Robitussin Dry Cough 100ml

Robitussin Dry Cough is a liquid cough syrup for dry, irritating coughs, supplied in a 100ml bottle and suitable for adults and children over 12 years old. It is aimed at the tickly, unproductive cough that brings nothing up and tends to be worst at night.

How it works

A dry cough serves no useful purpose: there is nothing in the airway to clear, and the cough itself irritates the throat, which provokes more coughing. A cough suppressant acts on the cough centre in the brain to raise the threshold at which that reflex fires, breaking the cycle. This is the opposite of what an expectorant does, which is why matching the medicine to the type of cough matters.

How to use it

Shake the bottle and measure the dose with the device supplied, following the pack and leaving the stated interval between doses. Do not exceed the maximum in 24 hours. Fluids, a warm drink with honey and keeping the air from getting too dry all help a dry cough, and honey has reasonable evidence behind it for adults and children over one year.

Who it is for

It is for adults and children over 12 with a dry, tickly cough. It is not for a chesty or productive cough, where suppressing the reflex is unhelpful, and not for children under 12. A pharmacist should be consulted if you have asthma, COPD or any long term breathing condition.

Safety and when to get advice

Drowsiness can occur, so take care with driving until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol. See a doctor for a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, breathlessness, chest pain, wheezing, a high fever, unexplained weight loss, or night sweats. A cough in a smoker that changes in character should always be checked. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

Dry or chesty cough, how do I tell?
A dry cough brings nothing up and feels tickly. A chesty one produces phlegm and needs a different medicine.

How long should a cough last?
Coughs after a viral illness often linger for two to three weeks. Beyond that, get it checked.

Can children take it?
Not under 12. Ask a pharmacist about options for younger children.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.

Duration: Use Robitussin Dry Cough 100ml for as long as symptoms persist, but do not use it for more than seven days without consulting a healthcare professional.

Ingredients

Robitussin Dry Cough 100ml's effectiveness is attributed to its active ingredient, dextromethorphan hydrobromide. This ingredient acts as a cough suppressant, helping to reduce the urge to cough.
