Rizatriptan 10mg Tablets

Rizatriptan 10mg is used to treat acute migraine attacks in adults. It belongs to the triptan group of medicines and is taken once a migraine headache has started. It is a medicine that requires a clinician to assess whether it is suitable for you.

How it works

During a migraine attack, blood vessels around the brain dilate and nerve pathways release substances that amplify pain and cause the nausea and light sensitivity that come with it. Rizatriptan acts on serotonin receptors to narrow those vessels and block the release of those substances, interrupting the attack. It treats the migraine you are having and does nothing to prevent the next one, which is a separate kind of treatment.

How to use it

Take the tablet as soon as the headache phase begins, rather than during an aura if you get one. If the headache responds and then returns, a second dose may be taken after the interval specified. If the first dose has no effect at all, a second for the same attack will not help. Do not exceed the maximum in 24 hours, and lying down in a dark quiet room alongside often helps more than people expect.

Who it is for

It is for adults with a diagnosis of migraine where a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate. It is not suitable for anyone with coronary heart disease, a history of heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, significant peripheral vascular disease, or certain rarer migraine types, and it must not be taken with an MAOI or within two weeks of stopping one.

Safety and when to get advice

Tingling, dizziness, drowsiness, and a feeling of heaviness, tightness or warmth in the chest, neck or jaw are reported. Seek urgent medical help for significant chest pain or tightness, breathlessness, or symptoms of stroke such as weakness, numbness or difficulty speaking. Contact a clinician if your headache pattern changes, if it is the worst you have ever had, if it comes with fever, a stiff neck or confusion, or if you are using acute migraine treatment on more than about 10 days a month, since that itself causes headache. Directions

Administering Rizatriptan correctly is crucial for achieving optimal results. The medication is available in two strengths: 5 mg tablets and 10 mg tablets. Always follow your healthcare provider's recommendations regarding the appropriate dosage.
Take Rizatriptan by mouth and swallow it whole with a liquid.
The recommended dose is usually 10 mg.
If you are taking propranolol or have kidney or liver issues, your doctor may prescribe the 5 mg dose. A minimum of 2 hours should elapse between taking propranolol and Rizatriptan, and you should not exceed 2 doses within a 24-hour period.
In case your migraine returns within 24 hours, you may take an additional dose of Rizatriptan, with a minimum 2-hour interval between doses.

Ingredients

Rizatriptan tablets contain the active ingredient rizatriptan, which is available as rizatriptan benzoate. This essential compound serves as the core component responsible for targeting the underlying mechanisms of migraine headaches. In addition to rizatriptan, the tablets also consist of other ingredients such as mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, aspartame, magnesium stearate, and colloidal silicon dioxide. These ingredients work together to create a tablet that can be easily ingested and effectively absorbed by the body.

Side Effects

Like any medication, Rizatriptan may cause side effects in some individuals, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects reported include dizziness, sleepiness, and tiredness. Other potential side effects may include:
- Tingling or decreased sensitivity of the skin
- Headache and tremors
- Flushing (temporary redness of the face)
Throat discomfort and dry mouth
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Muscle pain and neck stiffness
Changes in heart rate (palpitations)
