Regaine for Men Extra Strength Foam 5%

Regaine for Men Extra Strength Foam contains 5% minoxidil and is a topical treatment for male pattern hair loss at the crown. The foam is applied directly to the scalp once or twice daily as directed, absorbs quickly and leaves no residue, which is why many men find it easier to live with than a liquid solution.

How it works

In male pattern hair loss, follicles gradually shrink and each growth cycle produces a finer, shorter hair until the follicle stops producing visible hair at all. Minoxidil widens the small blood vessels around the follicle and prolongs the growth phase of the hair cycle, which allows follicles that are miniaturising to produce thicker hair again. It works on the follicles it reaches, so it is applied to the scalp rather than taken by mouth.

How to use it

Apply to a dry scalp, parting the hair so the foam reaches the skin rather than sitting on the hair, and spread it over the thinning area. Wash your hands afterwards. Use it every day without fail, since minoxidil works only while it is being used. Expect some increased shedding in the first weeks as resting hairs are pushed out by new growth; this is normal and not a reason to stop.

Who it is for

It is for men aged 18 to 65 with hair loss at the crown. It works best where thinning is recent and the follicles are still active, so it is less likely to help where the scalp has been bald for a long time. It is not for use by women, who should use the Regaine for Women products, and not on irritated, sunburnt or broken scalp skin.

Safety and when to get advice

Scalp irritation, dryness and itching are the most common effects. Stop and seek advice for chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain or swelling of the hands and feet. See a GP if hair is coming out in patches, if shedding is sudden and rapid, if the scalp is scaly or sore, or if hair loss comes with tiredness or other symptoms, since those suggest a different cause.
