Pregnacare Conception for Him and Her

Pregnacare Conception for Him and Her is a dual pack supplement for couples trying to conceive, with separate formulas for each partner. It provides nutrients relevant to preconception health, including folic acid and zinc, and is designed to be taken in the months before pregnancy rather than once it has begun.

How it works

The two formulas differ because the nutritional needs do. The female formula includes folic acid, which UK guidance recommends from before conception because the neural tube forms in the earliest weeks, often before a pregnancy is confirmed, and taking it only after a positive test can be too late to matter. The male formula includes zinc, which contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, and selenium, which contributes to normal spermatogenesis. Sperm take around three months to develop, which is why starting early is recommended.

How to use it

Each partner takes their own tablets as directed on the pack, with or just after a main meal and with water or a cold drink. Start several months before trying where you can, and continue as directed. Once pregnancy is confirmed, the woman usually moves on to a pregnancy specific formula such as Pregnacare Original or Plus.

Who it is for

It is for adult couples planning a pregnancy. Women needing a higher dose of folic acid, including those with diabetes, a raised BMI, epilepsy on certain medicines, coeliac disease, or a previous pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect, should speak to a GP, as a stronger dose than any general supplement provides is recommended.

Safety and when to get advice

Do not take additional vitamin A supplements or cod liver oil alongside, as high vitamin A intake should be avoided around pregnancy. See a GP if you have been trying for a year, or six months if the woman is over 35, and sooner if periods are irregular or absent, there is a history of pelvic infection or surgery, or either partner has a known fertility issue.
