Description

Nurofen Plus Tablets

Nurofen Plus is a stronger pain relief tablet for adults and young people aged 12 and over. It is used for headache, toothache, period pain, back pain and muscular or joint pain where ordinary painkillers have not been enough. It combines two active ingredients and is intended for short term use only.

How it works

The two ingredients work on pain by different routes, which is why the combination is stronger than either alone. Ibuprofen, a non steroidal anti inflammatory, blocks the production of prostaglandins, the chemicals that drive inflammation and sensitise nerve endings. Codeine is an opioid that changes how the brain and nervous system receive and interpret the pain signal once it arrives.

How to use it

Swallow the tablets with water, with or just after food, following the dosing on the pack and leaving the stated interval between doses. Do not exceed the maximum in 24 hours, and do not take any other ibuprofen, NSAID or codeine containing product at the same time. Pharmacy supply is for no more than three days; if the pain is still there after that, it needs assessing rather than more tablets.

Who it is for

It is for adults and young people aged 12 and over. It is not for children under 12, not for anyone who has had their tonsils or adenoids removed for breathing problems, and not during breastfeeding. It is unsuitable for anyone with a history of stomach ulcer or bleed, asthma worsened by NSAIDs, severe heart failure, significant kidney or liver problems, or a history of dependence.

Safety and when to get advice

Codeine can cause constipation and drowsiness, and with continued use tolerance and dependence, which is why the course is deliberately short. The ibuprofen component carries a risk of stomach irritation and bleeding. Stop and seek urgent help for black tarry stools, vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds, severe stomach pain, wheezing or swelling of the face or throat. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

Why only three days?
Codeine can cause dependence and medication overuse headache, so pharmacy supply is short and then reviewed.

Can I take paracetamol as well?
Often yes, since it works differently, but check with a pharmacist first.

Can I take it with plain ibuprofen?
No. This already contains ibuprofen, and doubling up risks stomach bleeding.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.

Ingredients

Delve into the active ingredients within Nurofen Plus Tablets, each contributing to its dual-action pain relief:

Ibuprofen: A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), ibuprofen inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are responsible for pain and inflammation.

Codeine: A mild opioid analgesic, codeine acts on the central nervous system to alleviate pain by blocking pain signals.
Together, these ingredients provide a powerful and focused approach to pain management.

Side Effects

While Nurofen Plus Tablets offer effective pain relief, they may occasionally result in side effects. These could include:

Gastrointestinal Effects: Mild gastrointestinal discomfort, such as indigestion or nausea, may occur.

Drowsiness: Codeine's mild sedative effect may lead to drowsiness in some individuals.

Allergic Reactions: Rare cases of allergic reactions, including skin rashes and itching, have been reported.

It's important to remember that side effects can vary, and not everyone experiences them. If you notice any unexpected reactions, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Warnings

Prior to using Nurofen Plus Tablets, it's essential to be aware of the following precautions:

Consultation with a Professional: If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, have a history of gastric ulcers or bleeding disorders, or are taking other medications, consult a healthcare provider before using Nurofen Plus Tablets.

Limited Duration: Nurofen Plus Tablets are intended for short-term use. Prolonged or excessive use may lead to adverse effects.

Dosage Adherence: Adhere to the recommended dosage and guidelines to prevent potential side effects.

Codeine Use: Nurofen Plus Tablets contain codeine, which can be habit-forming if used for extended periods. Avoid exceeding the recommended dose or using them for longer than necessary.

Driving and Machinery: Codeine can cause drowsiness. Avoid activities that require alertness until you understand how the medication affects you.
Nurofen Plus Tablets offer effective pain relief when used responsibly and in accordance with the provided directions.
