Malarone is used to prevent and treat malaria, a serious and potentially life threatening disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. It combines two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil, which work together against the malaria parasite in the blood. It is a medicine that requires a clinician to assess whether it is suitable for you and for your destination.

How it works

Atovaquone and proguanil each interfere with a different step the parasite needs to survive and multiply, and combining them makes it much harder for resistance to develop. Malarone also acts on the stage of the parasite in the liver as well as in the blood, which is why the course after returning is shorter than with some other antimalarials.

How to use it

Take the tablets exactly as directed, starting before travel, continuing every day while you are there and finishing the course after you return. Take them at the same time each day with food or a milky drink, since that improves absorption considerably. If you vomit within an hour of a dose, take another. Completing the post travel course matters, because stopping early leaves the liver stage untreated.

Who it is for

It is for travellers to malarial areas where a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate for that destination and for you. It is not suitable for anyone with severe kidney problems, and your clinician needs to know about pregnancy or breastfeeding, liver or kidney disease and all other medicines you take.

Safety and when to get advice

Nausea, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vivid dreams are commonly reported and are generally mild. No antimalarial is completely protective, so use repellent, cover up at dusk and dawn and sleep under a treated net as well. Seek urgent medical help for a fever during travel or in the weeks and months after returning, telling the clinician where you have been, since malaria can appear long after the trip.
