Levonelle One Step 1500 microgram Tablet

Levonelle One Step is an emergency contraceptive tablet containing 1500 micrograms of levonorgestrel. It is taken after unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure, can be used up to 72 hours afterwards, and is more effective the sooner it is taken. It is supplied from a pharmacy following a short consultation.

How it works

Levonorgestrel works mainly by stopping or delaying ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary. If no egg is released, there is nothing to fertilise. Because it acts on ovulation, timing is everything: taken early in the window it has the best chance of working, and taken close to or after ovulation it may not work at all. That is why it is not a substitute for regular contraception.

How to use it

Swallow one tablet with water as soon as possible after unprotected sex, with or without food. If you are sick within three hours, contact a pharmacist, as another tablet may be needed. Continue with your usual contraception afterwards, and use condoms until your next period. A higher dose may be needed if you take certain medicines, so mention everything you are on.

Who it is for

It is for people needing emergency contraception within 72 hours, following a consultation with the pharmacy team. It is not for regular use as contraception and it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. If more than 72 hours have passed, other options including a copper coil may be more appropriate, so ask.

Safety and when to get advice
