Description

Hydrocortisone 1% w/w Cream (brand may vary)

Hydrocortisone 1% Cream is a topical corticosteroid used for skin conditions that cause itching, inflammation and redness, such as eczema, dermatitis and insect bite reactions. It is supplied in a 15g tube and the brand may vary depending on stock.

How it works

Corticosteroids applied to the skin dial down the local immune response that produces inflammation. In an eczema flare or a reaction to an irritant, immune cells release chemicals that cause redness, swelling and the itch that leads to scratching, and scratching damages the skin further. Hydrocortisone interrupts that cycle. At 1% it is a mild steroid, the lowest potency tier.

How to use it

Apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice a day as directed, and wash your hands afterwards unless the hands are the area being treated. Use it for the shortest course that settles the flare, typically up to seven days without advice. A plain emollient used generously alongside is what keeps flares apart; the steroid treats the flare, the moisturiser prevents the next one.

Who it is for

It is for adults and children as stated, where a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate. It is not for use on the face, around the eyes, in the genital or anal area, on broken or infected skin, or for acne, rosacea or athlete's foot, unless a clinician has specifically directed it.

Safety and when to get advice

Short courses of a mild steroid are generally well tolerated, but prolonged or repeated use can thin the skin, particularly on the face and in skin folds. See a clinician if the area is weeping, crusted, hot or spreading, which can indicate infection, if there is no improvement after seven days, or if you find yourself reaching for it repeatedly, since that suggests the underlying condition needs a proper plan. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

How long can I use it?
Short courses, typically up to seven days without advice from a clinician.

Can I use it on my face?
Not unless a clinician has specifically told you to. Facial skin is thinner and more prone to steroid effects.

Do I still need a moisturiser?
Yes. Emollients used generously are what keep flares apart between steroid courses.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.

Directions

Proper application of Hydrocortisone 1% w/w Cream is essential to ensure its effectiveness and minimize the risk of side effects. Follow these general directions, but consult your healthcare provider or the medication's packaging for specific instructions:
Clean the Affected Area: Before applying the cream, gently clean the affected area with mild soap and water. Pat it dry with a clean, soft towel.
Apply a Thin Layer: Squeeze a small amount of cream onto your fingertip. Apply a thin layer to the affected area(s) and gently rub it in. Wash your hands thoroughly after application, unless your hands are the affected area.
Frequency of Use: The frequency of use and duration of treatment may vary depending on the specific skin condition and the recommendation of your healthcare provider or the product label. In most cases, apply the cream once or twice daily, but follow the guidance provided with the product.
Avoid Abrasive Materials: Avoid using abrasive materials or tight-fitting dressings over the treated area, as this can increase the risk of skin irritation.
Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist or worsen after using the cream, or if you experience any unusual side effects, consult your healthcare provider. Do not use the cream for longer than recommended without medical guidance.
