Description

Glycerol 4g Suppositories for Adults

Glycerol 4g Suppositories are a rectal treatment for occasional constipation in adults. They are inserted into the back passage and act locally, which makes them useful when a quick result is needed or when oral laxatives have not worked.

How it works

Glycerol works in two ways at once. It draws water into the lower bowel, which softens a stool that has become hard and dry, and it has a mild irritant effect on the bowel wall that encourages the muscle to contract and move the stool along. Because it is placed where the stool already is, it acts much faster than a laxative that has to travel through the digestive system first.

How to use it

Wash your hands, remove the wrapping and moisten the suppository with a little water. Insert it into the back passage as directed on the pack, then try to hold it in place for the period stated rather than passing it straight away, since it needs time to soften the stool. A result usually follows within 15 to 30 minutes. Wash your hands afterwards.

Who it is for

These are for adults with occasional constipation. A separate strength exists for children. They are not suitable for anyone with a bowel obstruction, and a pharmacist should be consulted if constipation is a new change from your normal pattern.

Safety and when to get advice

Mild rectal irritation or cramping can occur. See a doctor rather than self treating if you have blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, severe or persistent abdominal pain, a change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks, or constipation that does not respond. Laxatives are for short term use, and needing them often is worth discussing. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

How quickly do they work?
Usually within 15 to 30 minutes, which is much faster than an oral laxative.

Do I need to hold it in?
Yes, for the period stated on the pack, so it has time to soften the stool.

Can I use them regularly?
They are for occasional use. Speak to a GP if constipation keeps returning.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.

Ingredients

Glycerin 4g Suppositories' effectiveness is attributed to its active ingredient, glycerin. Glycerin acts as a lubricant and stool softener, aiding in the passage of stool and providing relief from constipation.

Side Effects

Glycerin 4g Suppositories are generally well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience mild side effects. These side effects are typically temporary and may include:
