Flomaxtra XL contains tamsulosin hydrochloride and is used for the urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, an enlarged prostate. The extended release formulation is taken once a day and is designed to give cover across 24 hours. It is a medicine that requires a clinician to assess whether it is suitable for you.

How it works

Tamsulosin is an alpha blocker. As the prostate enlarges it presses on the urethra, and the muscle in the prostate and bladder neck tightens around it, which is what produces a weak stream, hesitancy, dribbling and frequent trips to the toilet. Tamsulosin relaxes that smooth muscle so the passage opens, improving flow. It eases the symptoms rather than shrinking the prostate itself.

How to use it

Swallow one tablet whole once a day with water, at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not crush or chew it, since that defeats the extended release design. Improvement is usually noticeable within the first couple of weeks. Rise slowly from sitting or lying for the first few days, as alpha blockers can cause dizziness at first.

Who it is for

It is for adult men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate where a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate.
