Fexofenadine is a non drowsy antihistamine used for allergy symptoms including sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, and itchy, watery eyes. It is taken by mouth, lasts through the day, and suits people who need to stay alert at work or behind the wheel.

How it works

When you meet something you are allergic to, the body releases histamine, and histamine is what produces the sneezing, itching, streaming nose and watering eyes. Fexofenadine blocks the receptors histamine acts on, so the signal does not land. It is a second generation antihistamine, which means very little of it crosses into the brain, and that is why it causes far less drowsiness than older antihistamines.

How to use it

Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food, as directed. Through a pollen season, taking it regularly rather than only on bad days generally gives steadier control. Avoid taking it at the same time as fruit juice, particularly grapefruit, apple or orange, since these reduce how much is absorbed, and leave a gap around indigestion remedies containing aluminium or magnesium.
