Cyclizine works by blocking histamine and acetylcholine receptors in the brain, particularly in the area responsible for balance and motion detection. By doing this, it helps to prevent and reduce the sensation of nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. This makes it particularly useful for motion sickness, where conflicting signals between the inner ear and brain cause discomfort. It also helps manage nausea caused by inner ear disorders, general anaesthesia, or certain medical treatments.

Medication details

Description

Cyclizine 50mg Tablets

Cyclizine 50mg Tablets are used for nausea, vomiting and dizziness, including motion sickness, vertigo and inner ear disturbances. Cyclizine is an antihistamine with anti sickness properties, and it is a practical option for travel and for conditions that upset balance.

How it works

Cyclizine blocks histamine signalling in the vomiting centre of the brain and damps down messages arriving from the balance organs of the inner ear. Motion sickness and vertigo both arise when those balance signals conflict with what the eyes are reporting, so reducing the signal is what settles the nausea and the spinning sensation.

How to use it

Swallow the tablets with water, following the directions on the pack. For travel, a dose taken before the journey begins works better than one taken once sickness has started, since it is easier to prevent nausea than to reverse it. Do not exceed the stated maximum in 24 hours.

Who it is for

It is for adults and children as stated on the pack. It is not suitable for anyone with a known sensitivity to cyclizine, and a pharmacist should check first if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate with difficulty passing urine, epilepsy, heart failure, or liver or kidney problems.

Safety and when to get advice

Drowsiness, dry mouth and blurred vision are common, so do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol. See a doctor for vertigo that is new, severe or accompanied by hearing loss, headache, weakness, double vision or difficulty speaking, and for vomiting that persists or stops you keeping fluids down. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

When should I take it for travel?
Before the journey starts, following the timing on the pack, rather than once you already feel sick.

Will it make me drowsy?
It can. Try the first dose when you do not need to drive.

Can I take it every day?
It is intended for short term use. Ask a pharmacist or GP if you need it regularly.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.

Directions

To use Cyclizine 50mg Tablets effectively, adults and children over 12 years should take one tablet up to three times daily. For motion sickness prevention, it's best to take the first dose one to two hours before travel. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare professional.

Ingredients

Each tablet contains 50mg of cyclizine hydrochloride as the active ingredient. Other components include lactose, potato starch, acacia, and magnesium stearate. Please note that these tablets contain lactose, which may not be suitable for individuals with lactose intolerance.

Side Effects

While many people tolerate cyclizine well, some may experience side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, or blurred vision. These effects are usually mild and temporary. If you notice any severe or persistent side effects, consult your healthcare provider promptly.

Warnings

Before starting cyclizine, inform your doctor if you have conditions like glaucoma, urinary retention, or prostate enlargement, as cyclizine's anticholinergic properties may exacerbate these issues. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medication, as it can increase drowsiness. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek medical advice before use. Additionally, cyclizine may cause drowsiness; therefore, refrain from driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
