Description

Anthisan Cream 25g

Anthisan Cream is a topical treatment for the itching, pain and discomfort of insect bites and stings, and for minor skin irritation such as nettle rash. The active ingredient is mepyramine maleate, an antihistamine, and the 25g tube is a sensible addition to a first aid kit for outdoor activities.

How it works

When an insect bites or stings, the body releases histamine at the site, and histamine is what causes the local swelling, redness and intense itching. Mepyramine is an antihistamine that blocks the receptors histamine acts on, so the reaction is damped down where it is applied. Breaking the itch cycle matters, because scratching damages the skin and makes infection more likely.

How to use it

Wash and dry the area, then apply a small amount of cream to the bite or sting and rub in gently, following the frequency on the pack. Wash your hands afterwards. Cooling the area first with a cold compress helps considerably, and keeping the skin cool reduces the urge to scratch. Do not apply it to broken skin.

Who it is for

It is for adults and children as stated on the pack with insect bites, stings or minor skin irritation. It is not for use on broken, blistered or infected skin, on extensive areas, or by anyone sensitive to antihistamine creams. It is intended for short courses only.

Safety and when to get advice

Local irritation or a rash can occur, and antihistamine creams can themselves cause sensitivity with prolonged use, which is why courses are kept short. Call 999 for signs of a severe allergic reaction after a sting: swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, dizziness or collapse. See a doctor for a bite that becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful over the following days, for a spreading red area, for fever, or for a tick bite followed by an expanding circular rash. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

How long can I use it?
Short courses only, as stated on the pack. Prolonged use can cause skin sensitivity.

Cream or antihistamine tablets?
The cream treats one or two bites locally. Tablets suit widespread reactions. A pharmacist can advise.

When is a bite worth getting checked?
If it becomes increasingly red, hot and painful over days, or if an expanding circular rash follows a tick bite.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.
