Aciclovir 400mg tablets are an antiviral medicine used for herpes simplex infections, herpes zoster (shingles) and varicella zoster (chickenpox). Taken by mouth, they act throughout the body rather than on one patch of skin, which is why tablets are used where a cream would not be enough. They are a medicine that requires a clinician to assess whether they are suitable for you.

How it works

Aciclovir is converted into its active form inside cells that are infected, and there it blocks the enzyme the virus uses to copy its DNA. Because that activation happens mainly in infected cells, the medicine acts largely where the virus is. It stops the virus multiplying rather than eliminating it from the body, which is why these infections can recur and why starting treatment early makes the greatest difference.

How to use it

Take the tablets exactly as directed, spaced evenly through the day, and complete the course even if symptoms improve. Starting within the first 48 to 72 hours of a shingles rash appearing is what gives the best result, so do not delay. Drink plenty of fluid while taking them, since aciclovir is cleared by the kidneys and good hydration matters.
