Fitness goals are among the most common resolutions people set — and among the most commonly abandoned. The problem is rarely motivation. It is that fitness is genuinely confusing at the start, and most beginners quit during the phase where nothing seems to be working yet.
Every beginning is difficult — do it anyway
Trial and error is a fundamental problem-solving method: repeated attempts, adjusted each time, until something works. We accept it readily in other parts of life — learning a job, raising children, working out how to arrange a room.
Fitness is no different, and it is worth expecting that from the outset. People differ in how they respond to training, what they enjoy, what fits their schedule and what their body tolerates. What transforms one person's fitness may be a poor fit for someone else. Some experimentation is unavoidable, and it is not a sign you are doing it wrong.
What tends to actually work
Before experimenting with the details, get the fundamentals in place — they account for most of the results:
- Consistency beats intensity. Three moderate sessions a week sustained for a year beats six punishing weeks followed by nothing.
- Progressive overload. Gradually increasing weight, reps, distance or duration is what drives adaptation.
- Combine cardio and resistance work. They do different jobs and complement each other.
- Choose something you can tolerate doing repeatedly. Enjoyment is not a luxury — it is the single best predictor of whether you will still be doing it in six months.
- Recovery is part of training. Adaptation happens during rest, not during the session.
- Sleep and protein. Both unglamorous, both disproportionately important.
How a good coach shortens the process
A competent trainer will not eliminate the experimentation, but they will make it much more efficient — correcting technique before it causes injury, structuring progression sensibly, and steering you away from approaches unlikely to suit your goals.
If you work with one, look for a recognised qualification (in the UK, look for registration with CIMSPA or a Level 3 personal training qualification) and someone who asks about your health history before your goals.
Where genetic testing genuinely fits — and where it does not
Genetic testing has been marketed in fitness with some enthusiasm, and it is worth being clear about what it can realistically offer.
It can indicate a natural tendency toward power or endurance performance, how quickly you may recover between sessions, and traits relating to injury risk and nutrient metabolism. For some people, that context is useful for shaping training and setting realistic expectations.
It cannot remove trial and error, prescribe an optimal programme, or predict results. Studies testing whether genotype-matched training produces better outcomes than standard programming have not produced consistent evidence that it does. Anyone promising that a DNA test will identify "the shortest, most optimal route" to your goals is overstating what the science supports.
Treat it as one useful input alongside how you actually feel, perform and recover — which remains the best data you have.
